Minecraft review

Minecraft is an open-world adventure game based on crafting and building. Extremely simple but creative and inspiring design plus endless imagination make Minecraft more than a game: since 2009, it has become the main virtual sandbox in the world.

Graphics and Sound 10/10

No one calls Minecraft primitive or obsolete now. On the contrary, any game with a cubic design is called a Minecraft's clone. Simple and cubic shapes of everything, including living creatures and the player's alter ego, allow for endless open worlds with thousands of elements. As for music, two albums of its ambient soundtracks are worth a separate release, and they have an army of fans either.

Controls 10/10

Minecraft is one of the most ubiquitous games ever available on phones and consoles, desktops, laptops, Raspberry Pi-based devices, and even cars! No wonder controls are optimized for properties of the particular device this version is for. Touch controls for mobile devices, gamepads for consoles, M&K, or, again, gamepad – for desktops, and all of them have their advocates.

Gameplay 10/10

In Adventure mode, your character appears in a strange place where you need to build your world from scratch. Make yourself a pickaxe, use it to cut trees, craft some weapons for hunting and self-defense, make yourself a shelter… and then an entire civilization. But what Minecraft is famous for is its creative mode. Immortal, with unlimited materials, you can build anything you want according to the in-game physics, alone or with teammates.

More than that: Minecraft can be a platform for mini-games. And there are many already, from zombie survival to detectives and quests. So, not only can you build your university campus, Mount Rushmore with whoever you want to celebrate, or the Eiffel Tower, you can set your own rules for these mini-games.

Lasting Appeal 10/10

Minecraft is as rich in possibilities as a virtual world can be. These cubes can be used for creating everything you wish, like physical ones by LEGO. In addition, the game constantly gets updates with new elements and crafting mechanics. So it's a game to live in.

Pros:

  • Fantastic creative freedom
  • Unique iconic visuals
  • Universal compatibility
  • Constant updates with new mechanics, materials, or creatures
  • Can be played over and over in any mode

Cons:

  • Not for you if you like it photorealistic
  • May take too many hours of your life
